Support for non-violent direct resistance from Palestinian Leaders
Friday 26th March, 2004

Just days after the illegal assassination of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin in Gaza - a crime under international law which provoked outrage from around the world (except the from the US government, which vetoed a UN resolution condeming the act) - seventy prominent Palestinian politicians and intellectuals have warned their fellow nationals that violent retaliation against the Israelis will play into Ariel Sharon's hands and damage the struggle for independence.

The signatories were placed in an advert in Al-Ayyam, the Palestinian Authority's newspaper. They called for Palestinians to refrain from violence and for the struggle against occupation to "rise again in a peaceful, wise large-scale uprising".

Hanan Ashrawi, the co-author of the Geneva accords commented that, "Even though people are in mourning and shock and under tremendous suffering they cannot respond in kind, because Sharon uses that as a pretext to inflict more violence on the Palestinian people."

"Resistance has to be redefined to be peaceful and non-violent. They cannot allow Sharon to set the agenda."

"Let's not fall into Sharon's trap. Let's show his moral and political bankruptcy by struggling for our moral right to end the occupation with peaceful means."

Hanan Ashwari

Mr Arafat joined the call to avoid shedding more innocent blood by urging his supporters not to attack Israeli civilians in retaliation for Sheikh Yassin's assassination on Monday.

The new Hamas leader, Abdel-Aziz al-Rantissi, has backtracked on his threat against US citizens, after calling on Muslims worldwide to attack Israelis and Americans who support Israel. A Hamas website has placed Ariel Sharon at the top of a hit list of politicians and soldiers it said should be killed in retaliation for Sheikh Yassin's death.

While Palestinians beyond the immediate ranks of Hamas have been angered and shocked by the assassination of Sheikh Yassin, there is also a fear that retaliatory attacks on Israelis will bring a new wave of military assaults on the West Bank.

Meanwhile Israel has dismissed the international criticism of its assassination of the Hamas spiritual leader in advance of a UN security council debate on a resolution condemning the killing.

Washington has already said that it will veto the resolution, sponsored by Russia and Arab countries, because it fails to mention that Hamas is responsible for killing hundreds of Israelis by suicide bombings.
